Demetrios Evening A117 is a floor-length navy blue ball gown cut from structured mikado, the heavier silk-blend twill that holds a crisp pleat and carries a quiet matte luster rather than the high shine of satin. A wide folded portrait band sits off the shoulder and wraps the upper arms like a built-in capelet, covering as much as a short sleeve while leaving the collarbone and shoulders bare, and a single hand-shaped mikado rosette is set where the band crosses at the shoulder. The bodice is lightly structured through the rib cage to a defined natural waist, then releases into a full pleated skirt that sweeps the floor. The back is high and completely closed: the band continues straight across, and a long row of self-covered buttons runs from the band past the hip over a concealed zipper. There is no beading, no slit and no open back anywhere on the gown, which puts it squarely among our clean, no-glitz styles and makes it an easy yes for a house of worship, a black-tie ballroom or a bar or bat mitzvah where you want real coverage without adding a wrap or a jacket. It comes in navy and in fuchsia, in sizes 0 through 28, and the tea length version of the same dress is style A117T.
A true ball gown lives or dies on the waist and the shoulder line, and both are things you have to see on your own frame. The portrait band has to land just at the edge of the shoulder to stay put through a receiving line and a first dance, and the natural waist seam has to sit at your narrowest point so the pleated skirt breaks in the right place - a half inch either way changes the whole silhouette.
