The Magic Continues in Our Alterations Department
Jan’s Boutique goes beyond a stunning showroom. Our alterations department is where the final touch of magic happens. We alter thousands of wedding gowns, evening dresses, and prom dresses each year, ensuring you look flawless on your big day or special event.
Once your dress arrives, we’ll send you a text message inviting you to come in for a quick try-on, so we can schedule your first fitting about two months before your wear date. Note: Alteration appointments cannot be booked through our website. Only a Jan’s team member can reserve an appointment. At each fitting, you’ll also book your follow-up appointment based on the amount of sewing needed.
Fitting Appointments
Most dresses require around two to three fitting appointments, depending on the style and your personal alteration needs. Dresses are typically ordered based on your largest measurement (bust, waist, or hips), so it may not fit perfectly at the first fitting.
- First Fitting: Your fitter pins the gown in all the right places to begin customizing it to your body.
- Second & Subsequent Fittings: We refine the fit, ensuring the dress feels comfortable and looks flawless.
Due to space constraints in our Alterations Department, we must limit fitting appointments to the customer plus two guests. Additional guests will be asked to wait outside the Alteration area.
Jan’s Sculpted Fit
This is our signature alterations process, setting us apart from other boutiques. With a team of six professional seamstresses, we’ll tailor your dress to perfection. Your fitter will shape the gown in the bust, waist, and hips over two to three fittings—or more if needed for custom work.
Some complex gowns may require four fittings to achieve that perfect silhouette. Many customers who initially go elsewhere return to us because few seamstresses match our expertise in bridal and evening wear. Trust Jan’s Boutique for professional, on-time service and a flawless fit.
Bring the Right Undergarments
To ensure a proper fit, please bring the undergarments you plan to wear on your big day (supportive bra, shapewear, etc.) to every fitting appointment. If you’re unsure which bra to use, our team can advise you and even help you purchase one from our selection.
Dress Hem & Shoes
A perfectly tailored gown also needs a perfectly measured hem. We’ll ensure your dress is hemmed to your exact specifications and heel height. Remember to bring your shoes to every fitting so we can measure accurately.
- If you don’t have your event shoes yet: Bring a pair with the same heel height and style to ensure accurate measurements.
- Jan’s does not sell shoes: Please shop for the right pair in advance.
Quality Control & Beading Check
Before your dress is ready for pickup, we conduct a thorough inspection of every bead, crystal, lace appliqué, and sequin. If you notice any loose embellishments, please let your seamstress know so we can secure them at no additional charge.
Our 100+ Years of Combined Experience
When you choose Jan’s Boutique, you’re choosing a select group of highly qualified seamstresses with decades of experience. We guarantee your dress will be altered professionally and on time, so you can look and feel your best for your special event.
If you purchase your dress online, there’s no local store to stand behind the gown in case something goes wrong. And be aware of cleaners or inexperienced tailors who may not have the expertise to alter intricate bridal and evening dresses.
Word to the wise: Always know who’s working on your dress. At Jan’s, we take pride in every stitch, ensuring that your investment is in the hands of certified professionals.
